Helen Duncan: The Medium Who Shook a Nation

This article is in reference to a BBC documentary “Dark Premonitions Paranormal Britain’s Last Witch” that is only available in the UK. Helen Duncan was a physical medium in the UK during the Second World War and is notable for being tried and convicted of witchcraft under a 1753 law. Naturally, this law presumes the existence of witchcraft. For this reason, and the exceptional skill she displayed during her lifetime, she was, and still is, a controversial figure to say the least. Like many documentaries on the paranormal, this one is a mixed bag.

In addition to being the owner and chief editor of Paranormal Daily News, I have spent decades researching her work and have worked closely with Helen’s granddaughter. I assisted the producers of the documentary by connecting Helen’s granddaughter, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Hahn, who was too ill at the time to be part of the broadcast, and ensuring her role as the surviving member of the family that is fighting to clear Helen’s name. Margaret has been researching and fighting for over 40 years.

It has also come to our knowledge that some people and organizations are already exploiting Helen’s story for personal gain. We have noted that they are not authorities in the subject matter and are profiting from the pain of the family. Such behavior is condemned by Helen's immediate family and team.

The Most Prolific Medium Of The Time

Helen Duncan was, and still is, the most prolific physical medium of our time. She demonstrated remarkable physical mediumship where she materialized full-form spirit figures in red light. In séances, these spirits were able to commune and communicate with their loved ones, providing astounding evidence. Her name is often whispered with reverence in spiritualist circles and reviled in the corridors of power even to this day. There is no self-proclaimed medium today that can come close to what Helen could do in the séance room. In fact, she has recently become the subject of another BBC documentary that plays out in four parts. I cannot say that I support the choice of the name ‘Dark Premonitions Paranormal Britain's Last Witch, but I understand the need for a clickbait title to sell the show. The show presented itself well and had a compelling storytelling narrative, in my opinion.

Decades after her passing, Helen Duncan’s life remains shrouded in controversy, her legacy tangled in a deception spun by those who sought to silence her. There are many so-called experts who have no connection to Helen and who use third-party knowledge to formulate their assumptions. Skeptics lack firsthand experience of events that challenge the fundamental principles of science, leading them to adopt unfounded assumptions. Scientists who are chained to the materialist paradigm and others who are mere sheep in a pen, unknowing that a wolf has infiltrated.

Truth Obscured

The truth is often obscured by fear and manipulation. Just look at the world around us. Manipulation is rife, and it is no different now than it was in Helen’s time. The fear and manipulation of Helen have left a wound that lingers in her family to this day. The documentary was acceptable in many ways and unacceptable in other ways, featuring some questionable, hypothesis-based theories. However, it's important to keep in mind that the documentary primarily focused on the journey of a single woman, who had no prior knowledge of Helen, yet took on the task of investigating her story.

helen duncan last witch

At times, it felt as though it was way more about the journalist’s journey than the real truth behind Helen, which I would have preferred. This, however, was the true premise of the documentary, and I must set aside my bias. Easier said than done. Nevertheless, it is important to remind ourselves that it is a difficult story to tell with so much controversy. Journalist Sian Eleri infused the storytelling with personal intrigue and kept you engaged, but as usual, the BBC inevitably overdramatized it.

If we accept the documentary's depiction of spiritualism and mediumship as a standard, it falls severely short. There was much that was not said, and the lack of evidence in the demonstrated mediumship did no favors for those of us who have dedicated our lives and service as professional mediums. I'm glad it was about Sian Eleri and her journey, not spiritualism or mediumship. Helen’s life just happened to be the subject. Nevertheless, as I mentioned to Maggie, it was and continues to be an opportunity to uncover the truth and provide behind-the-scenes education.

Building Bridges to the Truth

It is an honor for me to finally uncover the truth and shed light on the shrouded ignorance. As I previously mentioned, my friend and colleague Helen’s granddaughter Margaret Hahn has been fighting for over 40 years to clear her grandmother's name. She was to fly to Scotland to be filmed for the documentary, as she is the only surviving family member who has spoken out about the injustice done to her grandmother over a considerable time. This was something I tried to arrange with the BBC for Margaret. However, Margaret's health deteriorated, making it impossible for her to film on location. We managed to get around it, though, and recorded her interview online.

No Time For False Perceptions and 3rd Party Wisdom

winston churchill

I will not dive into a Rotten Tomatoes-type review of the BBC program. I'll let the so-called experts and pundits try to explain it. The presentation of the facts in a balanced format was a valiant effort to distinguish fact from fiction. But as I mentioned before, more could have been done to focus on Helen and the fight to clear a woman charged under an old, archaic law. The British prime minister during World War II was furious about this law's use in Helen Duncan's case and made his own demands. In a letter to the home secretary, he penned the following:

“Give me a report of the 1735 Witchcraft Act. What was the cost of a trial to the State in which the Recorder (magistrate) was kept busy with all this obsolete tomfoolery to the detriment of the necessary work in the courts?”

Winston Churchill was not ignorant of spiritualism and actually had some of his own experiences with paranormal phenomena.

The Family Lawyer

Graham Hewitt, a retired solicitor and member of Helen’s team to clear her name, stated the following misconception, and we already amended the statement above:

Sir Gerald Dodson certainly was not a junior magistrate. He was admitted as a barrister in 1907. Between 1925 and 1934 he was senior Counsel to the Crown at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey). He became a judge in 1934 and was then appointed as the Recorder of The City of London in September 1937. This meant that he was the most senior judge at the Old Bailey and had the administration of that court and the subsidiary courts under his jurisdiction.

It is time to strip away the veils of misjudgment and bring Helen’s story into the light. For too long, history has been written by those who sought to suppress her, distorting facts to protect their interests. But now, for the first time, we have direct evidence from Helen’s own family. We have proof that challenges the narratives dictated by authority figures of her time. We also have proof of the real identity of Helen’s spirit guide—affectionately known as Uncle Albert.

Let’s Recap Helen’s Work and Downfall

Most within the spiritualist community know of Helen Duncan’s infamous arrest in January 1944, an act of desperation by a government terrified of what she might reveal. In a séance, she manifested the spirit of a sailor from H.M.S. Barham, a warship that had undergone a classified operation. But few realize that her guide, Albert Stewart, had also delivered another staggering revelation: a warning to Brigadier Firebrace, Head of Military Intelligence of Scotland, about the fate of H.M.S. Hood. As a result of the revelation of the sinking of HMS Hood and subsequently HMS Barham, her work was called to the attention of military intelligence as a breach of national security.

During the Second World War, the British Admiralty imposed a strict veil of secrecy over the loss of their warships, concealing these tragedies not only from the enemy but also from their people. Families waited in agony, unaware that their loved ones had perished. When the grim letters of notification finally arrived, they carried not only the weight of sorrow but a stark warning;

Speak of this to no one.

Silence was demanded, enforced by the unrelenting fear that even whispers of the truth might find their way into enemy hands.

Assumptions Abound

The documentary suggests that Helen may have heard the stories that were likely spread in the area due to the need for grieving family members to unsilence themselves from the pain of not knowing. This analogy is reminiscent of old wives gossiping on a Sunday because there was nothing better to do. This statement is simply an assumption; no one truly knows the objective truth, and let's be honest, truth is often personal and subjective.

However, truth can also emerge unexpectedly and unconventionally. Within the sacred space of the séance room, truth had a way of surfacing. Helen’s spirit guide, Albert Stewart, was no ordinary presence, and his connection to the physical world was deeply rooted in a life tragically cut short. Born in Scotland, Albert immigrated to Australia, only to face a cruel fate. On Christmas Eve, 1912, while riding in a cart driven by a twelve-year-old boy, a sudden swerve to avoid a pothole sent him tumbling. The cart overturned, pinning him beneath the water. Desperate efforts to lift the weight proved futile. Albert Stewart drowned, his voice silenced in one world, only to emerge powerfully in another.

Albert's Death Certificate

helen duncan's guide

And so, through Helen, Albert continued his work. He was not just a spirit guide to her. He became a builder of truth, a messenger from the beyond whose insights shook the foundations of secrecy and threatened the government of the day. The British government may have feared Helen Duncan, but what they truly feared was the undeniable reality that the spirit world was listening, watching, and revealing what the living sought to hide.

Questionable Motivations

During the BBC documentary, Helen's motivation comes to fruition, and of course, those who investigated her mediumship failed to see that their motivations may have been clouded by false judgments and expectations. Such as questions about what she earned and if she deliberately chose an area based on the grieving who were ripe for the taking. But I also get how someone who has no experience with the afterlife or mediumship and can only go by third-party knowledge could be sidelined by assumptions.

The Mechanics of Helen’s Mediumship

Modern physical mediumship is also fraught with controversy, and to date, there is no self-proclaimed medium that even comes close to the materialization mediumship that Helen Duncan displayed. The lack of evidence is predominant in modern times compared to the level of empirical evidence that was shown in Helen’s time. Additionally, there is a significant deficiency in our understanding of what defines excellent evidence. But we must also remember that one man’s evidence is another’s failure. This need for real evidence was not evident in the documentary. I felt sorry for Sian, as she clearly was not experiencing what she should have, or, at worst case, it was edited out. The modern-day séance room also comes into question from many avenues, especially those within the skeptics' community, materialist science, and even uninformed spiritual perspectives.

Issues In The Seance Room

Let’s try and examine some issues. We are taken from dark to light, and what I mean is that we evolve from nothing into substance. We transform from formlessness into form, and this transformation represents the journey from dark to light. This journey has been used to justify developing physical mediumship in total darkness, but only certain waveforms of energy or light are needed. Helen exemplified the concept.

She never sat in complete darkness. According to her family and those who sat with Helen, she was always in a subdued red light. Everyone who sat with Helen could see the materialization take place. While the documentary shows one séance that is held in total darkness and another at the end that is in red light, the latter is in no way typical of a legitimate séance. The former was a legitimate seance by today’s understanding. Again, the last event leaves you with more questions than answers, and I suspect it would be fodder for the skeptical community, who will no doubt levy their opinions in due course. Clearly, our intrepid investigator was not convinced, and I know many others were not convinced of Helen’s presence in the room. Evidence is fundamental to all research, and empirical evidence is the pinnacle of scientific research.

Albert Speaks: A Rare Glimpse into the Mechanics of Materialization

In 1932, Albert himself, who was Helen’s guide, granted a rare interview through Helen’s mediumship, documented in The Two Worlds. The conversation not only reaffirmed the depth of his connection to Helen but also provided an extraordinary glimpse into the process of spirit materialization. It was this act of materializing spirits in her séances that both baffled and terrified skeptics.

Albert revealed that his role extended far beyond simply acting as a spirit guide; he was a builder of materialized forms, working with a group of spirits who manipulated a substance he called psychoplasm, as confirmed by Albert. We now refer to this material as ectoplasm, a substance that provides spirits with a temporary physical form. He called it thought manifestation, where the spirit form was shaped by the deceased and the sitters' expectations and energy.

Materialized form example image

helen duncan materializations

The ectoplasm, which resembled a cloth-like material, has been a point of controversy for many years. Many of the fake photographs depicting ectoplasm demonstrations, initially dismissed as Helen's fraudulent material, were actually staged to illustrate how spirit manifestations operated. This incident is clearly noted in a private diary that belonged to Helen’s husband, and we have the record in our possession.

Theories and Hypotheses

This revelation of fully materialized ectoplasm aligned with contemporary spiritualist theories but also posed unsettling implications for skeptics. If materializations were influenced by human consciousness as much as by spirit agency, could thoughts alone shape what was seen? That is a valid point and should also be considered in a séance, as most are prepared and have expectations. I even found myself falling into that trap at times and have always had to bring my awareness back to the moment. If so, could Albert's existence be partly due to the collective mind of his believers?

Nevertheless, the evidence presented gave far more weight to the truth of the continuation of consciousness after the death of the physical body. The evidence was astounding and empirical, and we have written statements from those at the various séances, including private sittings with Helen. A great deal of the evidence and phenomena was corroborated and had similar patterns throughout all séances and in all areas that were many miles apart. This brings into question the theory that the phenomenon was fake. Cheesecloth cannot disappear into the floor, yet the ectoplasm was witnessed and corroborated as having done exactly that. The witnesses were at different times, had no relationships, and were in areas that were all hundreds of miles apart, yet they all claimed the same. I will leave you with that thought to contemplate.

Spirit Forms Have Weight

During the interview, Albert also disclosed an astonishing fact: materialized spirit forms had weight. While most spirits manifested at around 4 to 9 pounds, some figures, particularly in highly developed cases, could reach up to 30 pounds. Helen, as the medium, could only withstand the extraction of about 26 to 30 pounds of substance from her body before suffering extreme exhaustion.

Undeniable Empirical Evidence

The empirical evidence presented was undeniable. The séance room was illuminated by ruby light, allowing witnesses to observe Albert’s full-form materializations. Sitters saw Helen enveloped in vast streams of ectoplasm. Up to ten measured yards of the substance extended from her mouth and nostrils before retracting. The sight was both mesmerizing and unsettling, leaving even seasoned investigators at a loss for rational explanation. Also note my theory above regarding witness statements.

Albert also spoke of the environment’s role in these manifestations. Atmospheric conditions influenced séance success, with dry and cold nights being most favorable. He explained that each sitter in attendance played an integral role, unknowingly contributing elements of their physiology to the spirit’s formation. This included calcium from bones, breath from lungs, and mental energy all being siphoned into the process. So, it shows the need for the spirit, the medium, and the sitters to work together during the séance.

Beyond the mechanics, Albert revealed an unsettling perception of the living from his vantage point in the spirit world. To him, those in the physical realm appeared shadowy and dark, almost insubstantial —merely echoes of their true selves. He said that, in contrast, it was often the spirits, not the living, who struggled to accept their passing. This is rather comforting because it exemplifies how we continue to exist after the death of the physical body and continue with our incorporeal form.

In this extraordinary exchange, Albert did more than defend Helen’s mediumship. He provided a framework for understanding how spirit communication worked at its deepest levels. He refuted the notion that séances were mere parlor tricks, instead positioning them as scientific experiments in an undiscovered field of study.

The Head Of Intelligence Sat With Helen Duncan

On May 24, 1941, Brigadier Roy Firebrace, Head of Intelligence in Scotland, had the opportunity to attend a séance with Mrs. Duncan in Edinburgh. Mrs. Duncan’s control, Albert Stewart, appeared during the séance and suddenly said, “a great British battleship has been sunk”. Brigadier Firebrace was not aware of us losing a ship. When he returned to his headquarters approximately two hours after the sitting, he heard on a private line from the Admiralty in Scotland that the H.M.S. Hood had sunk.

After receiving the news, Brigadier Firebrace checked the time of the sitting, and it was the actual time that Albert materialized and provided him with information about the sinking of the H.M.S. Hood.

According to Brigadier Firebrace, the authorities looked at Mrs. Duncan as a somewhat dangerous person. He went on to say that Scotland Yard did go to the spiritualist organization and consulted with Mrs. Duncan and Brigadier Firebrace to see how Mrs. Duncan could be prevented from giving out information like this, as the authorities admitted the information was accurate. This set in motion a series of events that led to the authorities targeting Mrs. Duncan.

Intelligence Services Surveilled Helen

intelligence services

In an interview with Chief Constable of Portsmouth, Arthur West, in 1979, West confirmed the intelligence community’s agenda. The recorded interview was played during the BBC documentary, and you can clearly hear West claiming there was governmental foul play or a conspiracy. In short, West claimed that the intelligence services or government institutions would do anything to get rid of her or just make it all go away. Helen became a scapegoat for the governmental agenda. I can understand why there was turbulence in the intelligence community. D-DAY was not far away, and there was a need to keep everything as secretive as possible, so the revelations by Helen were considered a potential intelligence threat. After all, it was World War II.

Guy Liddel Quote

The Barham case has come up once more. A medium has produced a drowned sailor called Syd, who was recognized by several people present at the seance and said he was one of the crew. Cookie and Cussen are once more taking up the trail.

(Lawyer) Graham also further corroborated new evidence and stated in an email to PDN:

That was the basis of the investigation. We are having to prove that the main witnesses in the case were there as “agents provocateur” in order to entrap Helen and to force her to be arrested. They had a misleading understanding that she was using “muslin cloth” rather than ectoplasm. They have no deep understanding of what physical mediumship was all about. Harry Price had tried to intervene (to) give information to the Chief Constable. He was on the expedition to earn money. I have a letter from his “secretary” working in the War office that she had confirmed that this was an intervention on behalf of the Admiralty.
On 19 January when she was arrested, Worth and Cross went out to achieve an entrapment on police instructions. The police were in attendance outside the séance room and that is when Inspector Ford intervened. This had been manufactured as an exercise on 17 January. All of this is new evidence which has not been reviewed or disclosed and is confidential until approved by the grandchildren. At the time of writing this, it has been officially approved.

Skeptics and Magicians

Despite the extensive research and investigations into Helen’s mediumship, there was never any fraud detected, and all claims of fraud were mere assumptions. Those assumptions exist to this day. At one point in the documentary, a well-known skeptic, Professor Richard Wiseman, known for his exposure of fraud in psychic phenomena and mediumship, is brought in to discuss the research of Harry Price and to offer his personal theory in support of Price's assumptions. Wiseman shows Sian various photos that apparently depict fraudulent materialism, and he discusses the belief that what she was doing was regurgitating cheesecloth.

Again, these are mere assumptions, and no one has any proof of the genuineness of the images from both camps and if the photos may have been staged as a mere example. One has to also consider the amount of so-called cheesecloth Helen would need to consume. It would be a biological and physiological impossibility to swallow the amount that was protruded without serious injury to the biological functioning of the human anatomy.

Magicians and Skeptics

The documentary also fails to mention the magic circle leader's evidence or explanation, who was baffled by the events. Actually, I am probably being unfair, as perhaps the editors would not have any experience with Mediumship and would not know how important it really is to have this as testimony. Nevertheless, one of the most striking validations of Helen Duncan’s mediumship came from none other than Will Goldston, founder of the Magician’s Circle and a man who spent his life studying and exposing illusions. In 1932, Goldston attended her séances not as a believer but as an expert trained to detect deception. He was left speechless by what he witnessed. He described multiple spirit forms, each with distinct personalities and voices, something he admitted could not be explained by ventriloquism, sleight of hand, or any known trickery.

In a later test séance, Helen was bound with handcuffs, cord, and thread, and her thumbs were tied so tightly they left marks. Still, within minutes, she walked freely from the cabinet. Goldston openly stated that he had no explanation for what he saw. Coming from someone so deeply rooted in the world of magic and illusion, that kind of testimony holds weight. It suggests that what unfolded in those rooms wasn’t performance. It was genuine, and it defied explanation. This is one part of the story that should not have been omitted. It would have given balance to a skeptical inquiry.

Voiced Opinions

I voiced my opinion to the BBC producer about the use of any skeptics before filming and during the information-gathering phase of the documentary. I also voiced the concerns of Maggie based on the history of the past events that persecuted the family, and we did not want another repeat of the past. However, I accepted the need to have a balanced approach and to give the opinions on the science and skeptical side of the inquiry. I do feel that whilst it was handled adequately, more could have been done to contrast the two dynamics.

The Truth Behind the Persecution

Helen Duncan’s story is not just one of mediumship. It is a story of persecution, of a world unwilling to accept the unknown, and of a woman whose gifts became a battleground between truth and power. The British authorities sought to discredit her, twisting scientific phenomena into accusations of fraud. The church branded her work as heresy. However, the evidence—the very laws of physics governing the ectoplasmic materializations repeatedly witnessed—presents a different perspective. During the trial, Helen’s lawyer actually offered proof of the existence of Albert by demonstrating the mediumship and manifesting the voice of Albert, but the jury declined it. We do not know if the decline was forced or if it may have been a genuine fear of the potential for discarnate phenomena to present themselves. Nevertheless, Albert was willing to demonstrate his existence.

The interview with Albert serves as both a testament to Helen Duncan’s authenticity and a direct challenge to those who dismissed her as a charlatan. It stands as a stark reminder that Helen was not the illusionist they claimed, nor the fraud they feared. She was an entirely different entity, posing a far greater threat to the establishment. Helen shattered the very illusions of reality and power. She was the keeper of a door they desperately wanted to keep shut.

And today, as we revisit Helen’s legacy, we must ask ourselves: What is it that we still fear?

And more importantly:

Are we finally ready to listen?

Final Thoughts

This article is a collaborative effort aimed at revealing the truth and definitively dispelling myths. There will be more articles to come as we focus on new evidence unknown to the public and, of course, the legal community. Personally, I believe the documentary was one of the better ones available, although it may have overlooked some important points. I acknowledge the potential influence of my personal bias. Nevertheless, it has shed more light on the case, and the documentary was more balanced. We are happy about that, and the new evidence will bring us one step closer. Margaret is aware of those who are profiting from the case and she notes that none of these individuals or organizations are supported by the family or Helen’s team.

Together, we will continue the fight for Helen’s legacy and truth. Maggie is fighting—not only for her grandmother but also for her life— as she battles a horrific illness. Her greatest strength comes from the love and the desire she has to fight not only for Helen Duncan but to reveal the real truth behind this remarkable woman who was the greatest ambassador for spirit in her time and whose impact can still be felt today.

The Real Reason Why Personal Development is Crucial in Mediumship

personal development

This article was originally published in The Afterlife Magazine by The Otherside Press which is now part of the PDN family.

Why Personal Development is Crucial in Mediumship

The journey toward becoming a medium can be a very exciting one — full of first-time, mind and soul altering experiences. After all, coming to know the unseen world in very personal and passionate ways is incredibly fascinating and unique, and no one pathway is ever quite the same.

Along the road, we take classes, workshops, seek out mentors, read a plethora of books, and venture on many roads-less-travelled in search of a powerful connection to ourselves, the spirit world and the universe at large. One thing, however, that we can sometimes miss is the call from within to tend to personal blocks and wounds that may exist within our very selves.

We can sometimes be so motivated to help the other – to find ways to ease the suffering and spur the growth and healing of those who might need our help – that we miss the very first and most crucial aspect of any spiritual work, which is healing the self.

Getting It Right With Personal Development

As intermediaries between the worlds, Mediums have the honor and privilege of relaying messages of importance from those in spirit to those here in the living. But along with that ever-important task, the vocation carries with it tremendous responsibility to ‘get it right’. But what does ‘getting it right’ even mean?

It has been a fascinating journey over years of teaching and mentoring new mediums to develop and hone their skills. Skill development alone is a long-term commitment. It requires care, attention, focused learning, and practice.

Progressing from your first real contact with a spirit person to sitting as a professional in service to others (and being consistently good at it) can take years, indeed.

Development circles, classes and having peak spiritual experiences are all par-for-the-course in the unfoldment of a mediumship practice. And each of these aspects of development and learning are critical — absolutely required.

Expanding Soul Consciousness

In the teaching of hundreds of students, some of whom are excellent professional mediums, intuitives and healers, I have consistently found tremendous value, and necessity, in moving beyond just the skill development aspects of mediumship.

As much as understanding and mastering the ‘mechanics’ behind spirit communication is an essential part of the learning process, so too is the development of greater levels of one’s soul-consciousness (you could also think of this as becoming more spirit-like, or shifting into a greater identity of self as a soul rather than just a personality). This process of transformation of identity or level of consciousness usually has to be preceded by some level of healing within the personality or ego bodies.

Guiding students to enter into their own wounding, in search of meaning, purpose and eventual healing, should be as much a part of the long-term syllabus in mediumship development as exercises and experiences with the formless.

Personal Development and Healing

Healing is a big word, though, and it can get lost in a sentence quite easily. What exactly is meant by ‘healing’? I have always found the word itself needs to be understood more clearly, and in order to achieve that, we must anatomize it — we must unpack it a little.

Whether you are a student of mediumship or a soul journeyer, unpacking the term healing is all-important. For me, healing is about extracting the learning that is available to you out of a negative or wounding experience and then integrating that learning or growth into your life in a meaningful way.

The healing process really begins when we are able to assign or identify some meaning and purpose behind the challenges or the ache. When we are able to see what good can come out of it. Then we can step into the power to create our life out of what we are left with and make something meaningful out of it.

To discover meaning and purpose and eventually enter into the healing, we must touch the wound. We must find it. And we must come to know it honestly — deep as ever.

No Mud, No Lotus

Image: Canva

This is the part of personal development that can be scary — because it can hurt. But with the right guidance or mentorship from a soul-based coach, counsellor, or other trusted and soul-conscious individual or professional, you can absolutely enter into the woundedness and shift into healing. It is a beautiful universal truth and promise that following the darkness, we will enter into light. The light, or the new version of ourselves, isn’t about restoring who or what we were before. Rather, it is a re-birthing of our new selves.

But we must truly and authentically walk through that darkness, taking with us all there is to learn and know about the experience — no by-passing, no puddle jumping.

Walking through the mud is a good way to think of it…and the mud will eventually lead you to solid ground if you keep going. This truth is also demonstrated through the phrase, “No mud, no lotus”.

We all have the choice to walk through the dark and make our way to the light, but conversely, we can also enter into the shadow and choose (consciously or unconsciously) to not walk through to the other side – into the learning, the freedom, and the growth. Each of us has free will choice to do as we please. And may we never judge the choices of others, but rather see them (and ourselves) as we are, with a heart full of love, compassion, and kindness.

Understanding Universal Truths

Image: Canva

Within the context of mediumship, personal development involving shadow and wound work hold much relevance. When spirit people transmit messages, the mediumship messages are usually two-tiered in that they touch two levels of a reality; they touch the specific or particular and form aspects of a reality, and they are also steeped in the universal aspects of a reality – also referred to as a greater reality than what the form world so easily perceives.

Their messages at the surface can be specific and pertinent and often very resourceful in nature. For example: “Getting fired from your job was necessary for you, even though you can’t see how it’s beneficial from your current viewpoint. A new opportunity is sitting in the field of potentiality for you, once you have done a little more processing of the anger and fear that surfaced after you lost your job. Consider being open to opportunities presented to you by a close female friend”.

Behind (or more accurately, above) the resourceful message will be a universal truth being communicated. Strip away the details, and what is the spirit person saying?

Filtered upward into a universal nature or theme, this message is stating various universal realities that need to be communicated, some of which could include:

– All that we experience holds meaning and purpose, even if we can’t identify what they are right away

– Doors will close that are not meant for us

– Doors will open when the timing is right and appropriate for us, and not before or after

– There is no blame to be issued and the consciousness of blame is heavy and non-life-affirming

– While we have experiences within a life that are pre-planned by the soul, we also have free-will choice. This means that certain experiences will not come into our earthly life unless and until we have met other factors, which we reach through our own conscious choices to move forward and look at something with a deeper, more soul-infused lens

– Perceived negative experiences (wounds) highlight within us our own shadow – the parts of our soul consciousness that are not active, not identified with. In this way, woundedness is a powerful experience that points us in the direction of where we need to grow – it shows us our own shadow that is asking to be illuminated by the light of soul – it shows us parts of our soul that we are disconnected from and not identified with

– All woundedness teaches us to stop relying on others to fulfill the needs of our soul and empowers us to self-generate the qualities we want and need to experience. This puts us in a power position in our own life rather than in a victim consciousness. Because of this, we can and may eventually be grateful for the wound

Would you believe that in addition to the specific message about being fired from a job, spirit wanted you to say all of this stuff, too? Well, they did, indeed. Fully transitioned souls in the otherworld are conscious beyond what we can perpetually obtain while here in form — while we are still influenced by and expressing through the form bodies.

The vibrational frequency of a transitioned spirit person far exceeds what we can achieve for any appreciable length of time while in form.

Their consciousness or lens through which they ‘see’ things is always one of knowingness, lovingness and power, and as such, they want to impart this level of insight and wisdom to their loved ones here in the physical world. Why? Because they want to help in our personal development - our understanding, healing, and growth.

Honoring the Role of Messenger

This leads us to our own growth, personal development, healing, and understanding of the nature of spirit and the universe at large. Because spirit people wish to have universal truths and realities communicated to their loved ones here in the physical, and we as mediums have made a commitment to honor the role of messenger, then we must be equipped to share the messages: undistorted, unfiltered, unbiased.

If we do not tend to our own personal work throughout the journey of becoming intermediary between worlds, then we will have no personal understanding of universal truths because we will not have experienced the manifestation of those realities in our own lives. If we have no lived experience, then how will we be able to communicate these levels of truth to someone else?

Universal truths such as: our thoughts and beliefs create our experiences, consciousness or soul survives physical death, hard experiences are teachers for us, we have agreements with others souls in our life, everyone is doing the best they can from the level of consciousness they have, in the language of the universe there is no pass or fail, there are simply experiences, etc. are best known and expressed to others from a place of lived experience.

If we have not successfully walked through some level of wounding to healing ourselves, how can we help lead someone else there, authentically?

There is a case to be made for any individual who walks into their hurt and pain to emerge more empowered, more loving, more understanding, and more soul-conscious. Becoming greater versions of ourselves is one of the gifts we can give ourselves during the earth walks we choose. The case is of even greater importance for those who wish to be the messengers for the other side.

How the brain can interfere with natural psychic abilities

Dr Jeff Tarrant: I think one of the challenges that you're highlighting is that there's not a lot of data for people in trance conditions, or especially trance mediumship... Certainly we have data on people being in trance, because that can be a lot of different things… Shamanic traditions or hypnosis, deep meditation...

There are too many different people with different brain structures, so everybody won't look the same. One of the primary things we see in trance state is this increase in slow brainwave activity. Especially theta. And, you know, theta is an interesting brainwave because it's also associated with things like the subconscious and memory. So this gets into an interesting issue, and it's kind of what you were bringing up - is this coming from you? Even if you don't think it is, if it's coming from your subconscious… it's below consciousness. You're not normally aware of it.

So, is this you? Or are you actually tapping into another consciousness out there? I don't know.

I work with a lot of technology… not just measuring the brain, but also to train the brain, like neurofeedback or brain stimulation technologies. And I talk about this in the book because we've done enough… mini experiments. We've seen that we can stimulate the brain in a way that does seem to expedite the process for people. It kind of helps them tap in quicker or more easily or have different kinds of experiences.

One of the things that's interesting is… if I put really slow frequencies into the brain, then what it's doing is actually shutting it down…A lot of times we get bigger results in terms of mediumship or psychic activity if we shut down certain parts. At least from my perspective, I think the brain is largely interfering with our natural psychic abilities. It sort of prevents it. It limits information, which is largely what the brain does. That's its job… to filter information.

Very often what you'll see is that with these high level psychics and mediums, one part of the brain will shut down. There'll be an increase of slow activity, but another part of the brain will actually increase fast activity at the same time. And what I suspect is that this is how they are able to, first, connect with this information that's in a broader field, we'll say. But then you have to have some activation in order to bring it into your conscious mind and retain it, hold on to it, put words to it, explain it, right? Like, you kind of got to do both…

I think of it like a dream state… like where you have an interesting dream, and then you wake up and you can't hold on to it. It just disappears. And so, you're transitioning from this really deep state of consciousness to waking consciousness, and if there's not some sort of a way to connect those two, then, you lose it. You can't hold on to it. And so I feel like that's one of the skills that these really high level mediums and psychics have. Somehow they have figured out how to enter a state of consciousness where they can do both or shift really quickly between the two.

Jock Brocas: From the mediums you've researched, do you feel they're particularly adept in one part of the brain for one particular strength in their mediumistic capacity. Like, clairvoyance, claircognizance, clairaudience?

Dr Jeff Tarrant: So far, I have not been able to see anything that shows that really clearly… And part of the problem may be that most of the mediums I've talked to work out of multiple clair senses. They're not just clairvoyant or not just clairaudient. They work out of multiple senses. And so that's going to confuse things. But the one thing that I do see a lot is activation and by activation, in this case, I mean increased fast brainwave activity, especially gamma, in the occipital lobe in the very back of the brain, which is the visual processing… I see it all the time. And it's interesting because that's visual processing.

…The other big one would be clairaudience. We would probably target that in the temporal lobes, you know, where we process more of the auditory information. I haven't done as much with that. One of the other areas that we've explored more directly is the God spot… the right parietal lobe back here, which seems to be not for everybody, but I'd say 70% of the mediums. They show some unusual activity back there.

Energy healing & biodynamic craniosacral therapy

Dr Jeff Tarrant: It’s not like I can show that I've healed cancer or something, but over the weekend I was doing a training in energy work… and you take turns with being on the table. I had somebody on the table and was checking in beforehand, what's going on, is there anything I need to know about?

She said, “My left shoulder is… it's chronic…a wreck, so if you feel like going up there, that would be great.”

So I'm doing my normal kind of process going through the session. I was like, okay, I'm going to go up to that left shoulder, because she asked me to. I wasn't particularly drawn to go there. But I went up there, and because of the way the room was set up, I couldn't get to it very well. It was very awkward. I couldn't stay there for more than a couple of minutes, so I just left it alone and said, well, whatever… I can't do anything with that.

And then I went to the head and… this process that I'm using involves touch, physical touch… I wasn't touching the head - I was working with the energy field around the head and really just sensing it, holding it, supporting it, not trying to make anything happen, almost kind of tapping into… zero point or something like that… Getting into this no mind state where I'm just supporting the energy field of the person. So I did that for a while and wrapped it up. And honestly… I have no idea if I'm doing anything here or not. Right? Like, I don't know.

So, we wrapped it up and then we processed afterwards. The person on the table said:

“Dude, I could totally tell when you were on my head and what you were doing up there… And my shoulder… as soon as you let go of the energy around my head, my shoulder pain went away. It's completely gone.”

And I'm like, oh, okay.

We had training the next day, and she said, “My shoulder still doesn't hurt… it doesn't hurt at all.”

And I was like, that's brilliant. So, it's interesting, right? Because it wasn't like I went in and said, I am going to fix your shoulder. No. In fact, I felt like I wasn't doing anything.

Jock Brocas: That's the important point… I think that's a really fundamental point to think about because if you're in the way, nothing's gonna happen. And if you're out of the way, the expectation is not there… if you're not attached to the expectations, then wondrous things can happen. I think you've just proven that, or to a point.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: This process that I'm doing right now is called biodynamic craniosacral therapy… And I like it because it has this very non-directive approach. It's like, I'm not curing you. I'm not assessing you, even. I'm just making contact with you and with your energy and supporting you. I'm trying to drop myself into a place that's very centered and grounded and supportive. And I trust that your energy field can use that to heal itself. I don't have to do anything. And so, I really like that approach. It feels very, respectful of the other person. And effective. It really seems to work.

How psychedelics have a tendency to launch spirituality

psychedelics

Jock Brocas: So, does the technology enhance psychedelics? Do the psychedelics enhance the technology? Or do they both have separate correlates to what you're trying to do? Because you've got experience in the psychedelic world.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: I do. Both personally and professionally. So, are you asking the question, do psychedelics facilitate more psychic-type development? Yeah.

Jock Brocas: Yeah, so they facilitate more of these mystical experiences that we can measure from a psychic or evidential point of view, and is there a potential they're bringing technology into that as well?

Dr Jeff Farrant: Yes. It's pretty clear that people who work with psychedelics, whether it's psilocybin or ayahuasca or 5-MeO-DMT, whatever, it does tend to launch people's spirituality. And because people have these experiences of unity or connection and intense love, meeting other entities in these other realms, you know, all these things that are very convincing from a subjective perspective. When you have them… nobody ever comes out and goes like, oh, that was garbage. They come out and they go, that was more real than this is. People say that all the time. So, from a subjective perspective, it's really hard to argue with. And in fact, I've made major life decisions based on information that I received in psychedelic sessions.

Jock Brocas: No way, have you really? That's crazy.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: I was working at the University of Missouri and had a pretty cushy job. I went to… my second ayahuasca ceremony or something like that. And in the ceremony, I had the very, very, very clear download of information that I needed to leave the university. And I was kinda like, man… seriously? That's a big ask, right?... I was like, I don't have a plan… but it was so strong that I was like, I have to listen… And so I did. I left the university, and then that's what started everything. That's what started the Neuro Meditation Institute, got my first book out, and led to all this.

None of this would have happened if I had stayed at the university.

Jock Brocas: Wow. And that's all because you had that experience with a psychedelic, wow.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: Yeah. One of the primary effects of psychedelics is to temporarily shut down the networks in the brain that create your sense of self, right? We talked before about how the brain is this filtering mechanism, that it limits information and says, oh, here's reality right here. And that's it.

And then with psychedelics, it essentially shuts down those mechanisms for a little while, so that all of a sudden, what you can see and perceive and experience becomes way bigger than what your brain normally allows. Right? And if you do this and have the right experience under the right conditions, or you do it enough times…you can start to connect to that spaciousness and that energy without the psychedelics. It's not the same, but you can start to have more flexibility.

Jock Brocas: Which is what we do as mediums. It's interesting because I thought myself, Okay. Alright. You've worked in mediumship for a long time, and I've spoken to many people and researchers. If I took a psychedelic, would it enhance the experience because I had a mediumistic ability?

Here's an interesting thing. I was working as a professional medium, and… I was fairly good. But I had a near death experience. I had a car crash that nearly took us out, and I had a really strong out-of-body near-death experience. And when I came back, the abilities enhanced even more. So I had this feeling of an interconnectedness. Even now.

So I wonder, then, because I've never done psychedelics, but it's in my mind now because of the amount of research, do I try this to see where this will go? And am I holding on to that experience that maybe I had in that near-death experience, or is it gonna even go even deeper? Would it affect a trance medium in some way, or is there gonna be a different effect from someone who's just awakening to try a mystical experience or someone like Laura Lynne Jackson? Like, that'd be interesting. Has Laura Lynne taken any ayahuasca and had a completely different experience? Laura, if you're listening, have you? I want to know.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: Yeah… What's funny is, most of the mediums that I've talked to have no interest in psychedelics. They're almost kind of like, in a sense… I don't need to be any more open. You know, like, I'm already plenty open.

Jock Brocas: That's exactly how I feel, but I'm intrigued.

Dr Jeff Tarrant: It’s interesting.

Jock Brocas: It is. I said for years… there's no need to do that, I can have the same experience. But what if I did do that and take something and then had an even deeper experience… or even get back to the point where I felt that same interconnectedness as I did with the near-death experience? Is there a potential even for more research in that way? So, it does intrigue me. I haven't done it. And today, I'm like… it's there, it's in there, I'm thinking about it, and it would be interesting. And I think it might be an interesting field of research.

Dr Jeff Farrant: I think it would be…there's so much, right? I mean, like even in this brief conversation, we've come up with probably 100 ideas. There's so much to do and explore, which is also what's exciting for me… part of this is it's just the sheer exploration, right? Feeling like there are areas that we don't understand. And mystery. There's mystery out there. And to me, that's the stuff I'm interested in. Like, who cares about all the boring day-to-day stuff? Right? I mean… we got to make money, and we got to pay bills, and we got to do that. But the mystery is for me, the fun stuff.

How a Ghost Inspired a Profound Spiritual Journey

The author of this story is Fred Welling, an English spiritual medium who resettled in Adelaide, South Australia in the late 60’s. I was fortunate to witness his gifted mediumship demonstrations in local spiritualist churches which brought comfort and healing to many. His article was originally published in the popular Afterlife Magazine, which has since joined the PDN family.

We have much more to fear from humans than from spirits/ghosts

In the 1940s, my parents and I lived in a two-storey home in Southampton, England and like many children, I was scared of the dark and things that go bump in the night. My bedroom was at the top of the stairs and as a young boy of 5 or 6 years old, when I climbed those stairs, I often felt that someone or something was standing at the top of them. Terrified, I would jump into bed and pull the covers right over my head. I heard scary noises and felt that someone or something I could not see was in the bedroom with me.

My parents were both psychically aware and used to tell me that I had much more to fear from humans with physical bodies than from spirits/ghosts. They also encouraged me to not be afraid of the unseen presences in my room as they would not harm me.

However, I was not too sure of this. We often spent time downstairs in the living room, talking or listening to the radio. We began to hear crashing sounds from upstairs, my father and I would run up the stairs to find dozens of the fragile, mantlepiece ornaments scattered all over the floor of my parent’s bedroom. It was amazing that none of these ornaments ever broke.

My father, a professional boxer, eventually became completely frustrated with this recurring activity and in a strong and authoritative voice, he said: ‘We do not mind you visiting but please do not do that again!’ From that time onward, to our relief, the ornaments were left alone.

Learning that ghosts are not ‘bad’

During my teenage years I met a young man called ‘Buck’ who became a friend. Buck was training to become a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. He was fully aware of the unseen world of spirit and could have conversations with those in the spirit world as clearly as with a group of friends in this world. Buck’s spirit guide told him: “You will be a good priest, but you will help more people if you do not become a priest.”

One evening, Buck was visiting the family and went upstairs to use the toilet. He was away a long time and when he returned, with my dry sense of humour, I couldn’t resist asking if he had fallen into the toilet. Buck ignored my question and asked if we had ever noticed anything unusual at the top of the stairs. We all replied, “Yes.”

He revealed that he had seen a young mother holding a baby at the top of the stairs and found out that many years ago, this young woman had committed suicide in my parent’s bedroom. Her young baby also died in that room.

The mother had become ‘stuck between the worlds’ and had been trying to get someone’s attention for quite some time. Even though my parents were psychically/spiritually aware, they had not been on the same wave length as the mother and baby and were therefore unable to help.

Fortunately, Buck was able to tune in to the mother’s spiritual energy level and assist her and the child to move on to a more fulfilling life in the spirit worlds. To our relief, we no longer felt a sad presence at the top of the stairs. It was wonderful that Buck had been able to converse with ‘our ghost’ and help her.

This proved to me that life did indeed continue beyond physical death and that ghosts are not ‘bad’ but rather souls who need our love and assistance to help them move into the realms of light in the spiritual worlds where they are met by their loved ones. When I finished school and started work, I thought no more of these psychic experiences. However, little did I know that Spirit had only just started with me!

How my lifelong commitment to Spiritualism began

spiritual

In my early twenties, my beloved wife Doreen became ill with a heart condition. The doctors said that she would not survive without surgery. I gave permission and signed documents for the surgery to be performed but tragically, Doreen died on the operating table. For many decades I felt extremely guilty for having signed the papers and irrationally believed that I had killed my wife.

At the time I was living in Shirley, Southampton UK and heard about a Spiritualist Church which was within walking distance of my home. During my grief period, I visited this church on a number of occasions.

My first visit left me intrigued and I really enjoyed the service, so I returned the following week and sat near the back. The spiritual medium on the platform was an old lady who was almost blind. During her demonstration of evidential mediumship, she said: “I want to come to the young man who is hiding near the back.”

I was naturally stunned, as she could not have physically seen me. The medium gave incredible details of the relationship between my wife and me. This information was known only to me. She also emphasized that Doreen did not hold me responsible for her death. It was her time to leave the physical world.

So began my lifelong commitment to Spiritualism. I ended up vice president of that Southampton church and over the years, became an evidential medium both in the UK and later in Australia when my second wife (another Doreen) and our two daughters, Patricia and Barbara, migrated in 1969.

True tales from a closed physical mediumship development group

Before leaving the UK, I had heard about a closed physical mediumship development group at Lances Hill. There were about ten to twelve sitters in this group and after waiting several years, I was invited to attend as a visitor to see if my vibrations were suitable to join this group. To my delight, I was accepted and attended on a weekly basis, catching two buses there and back.

The development group was led by a medium who had leukemia and was not expected to live for long. However, we were told that he would continue his work until it was finished and then leave the physical world. When I left for Australia in 1969, the medium appeared to have recovered.

Physical mediumship involves spirit entities using the energies of a medium to produce tangible physical effects which can be witnessed visibly and audibly by everyone in the room at the same time. The spirit entities manipulate the energies and substances of a medium to form physical manifestations such as spirit ‘bodies’ that enable a spirit to speak directly from their world to ours.

The spirit communicators provide an interface of communication between our world on earth and their worlds known as spirit world. Other physical phenomena that can be produced include physical smells, hot or cold drafts, levitation, apportation of objects from mid-air, transfiguration, spirit lights, raps or knocks, direct voice communication and physical apparitions.

Each week we met in a private home in an upstairs, candlelit room that was reserved solely for the purpose of physical mediumship. Members of the group, referred to as ‘sitters’, would enter quietly and always sit in the same position and the same chair. This ensured that the group energy remained harmonious and balanced.

We were asked to talk quietly about spiritual topics while the medium prepared to move into a state of deep trance. Suddenly, there would be a change of energy and we knew that a spirit being was about to manifest physically in the room.

Opening our hearts to the Divine Force

The manifested spirit would speak through the medium for about thirty minutes on spiritual topics such as life beyond the physical world, karmic events affecting individual lives here on earth and what we could do to mitigate the negative effects. He emphasized the need to open our hearts to the Divine Force and to work in service to humanity.

Questions were permitted to be asked and answers were received. However, if the spirit being felt it was not in a person’s best interests to receive the answer, it was not given. Sometimes the spirit would move close to a sitter and hold their hands, an experience that felt like an electrical current passing through the body.

On the rare occasion when a guest hoped to be accepted into the group, the spirit would proceed to tell them a few of the things they had been doing that day as a means of confirmation and validation that their arrival had been anticipated. They were assured that this was an ongoing practice and there would be no further intrusion in anyone’s private life.

These major life experiences began my search for truth.

Fred & Liz Welling. Behind every great medium is an equally great woman

Australia Bound

Following my arrival in Australia, I settled in Adelaide, South Australia and joined various psychic development and self-awareness groups. For over 40 years I have continued to develop my ability to tune into the spiritual worlds and, like the old lady who was almost blind, I have worked on many platforms in spiritualist churches across the country.

I have been able to bring comfort to many people by giving them evidence that their loved ones are not dead but very much alive in a wonderful spiritual dimension. I am still doing this in 2020 at the age of almost 86 years young.

What Constitutes Real Evidential Mediumship?

Value of Understanding Real Evidential Mediumship

mediumship

Mediumship has enjoyed remarkable growth in the recent decades. More people are realizing the importance of real evidential mediumship in helping those who are suffering start the healing process. In reality though, everyone you meet these days is a medium. Many people don't really know what mediumship is or its long and diverse history. They rely on what they see in the media.

They believe they can save and heal people, but it's not true. What they think is evidential mediumship is not, and they call themselves evidential mediums, not really understanding what constitutes evidential mediumship. We then settle for poor standards and accept psychic intuition as spirit communication, and they are not communicating with spirit in any way. The communication is not flowing, consistently poor and has no pattern of an evidential story.

We cannot believe that what we see in the media constitutes the real story of mediumship. One person may have a little intuitive insight and wrongly think they are in communication. More now than ever, there is a real need to understand the process of mediumship and what constitutes good, supporting evidence. The lack of real evidence is just cannon fodder to our skeptical brethren, and who could blame them? If we are to stand any chance of being accepted as a legitimate practice, science or dare I say even a spiritual based philosophy, then there must be a certain standard of evidence that is easily accepted. However, there is a caveat and that may have to be the content of a part 2 “One persons’ evidence is another’s failure.”

Recognizing Evidential Mediumship

There are many self-proclaimed psychic mediums out there who do not understand the values of evidential mediumship or what constitutes evidence, and who, unknowingly, often read the auric energy, and talk in general terms about life issues and personality traits, rather than give real, valuable evidence.

I am not suggesting this is fraud, as the individual may be well-meaning and slightly ignorant of the mechanics of mediumship. Consequently, those experiencing the reading remain unaware and untrained, and do not understand what constitutes real evidence from a communicating spirit. So the sitter is more likely to accept certain validations as fact when in reality, they are rather general, including descriptions and personalities that could fit almost anyone, unless it was something unusual.

Our Rich History In Mediumship

Communicating with the other side has existed for thousands of years within tribes and varied cultures. The history of mediumship is rich with characters whose mediumship has even changed the course of history. In fact, most people think that spiritualism started with the Fox Sisters, but in reality, it was going on way before that. There have been many remarkable mediums in the past who shaped the history of spiritualism.

Leonora Piper

One of the most remarkable mediums of her time was Leonora Piper, whose level of evidence was astounding. She was one of the most tested mediums of her time and offered herself as a subject of inquiry for members of the Society Of Psychical Research (SPR). For many years, renowned psychical researchers such as Sir Oliver Lodge and philosopher William James collaborated closely with Leonora. She was able to give veridical evidence of life after death using her mental mediumship and unique ability with deep trance mediumship. Unlike many other mediums of her time, she was never caught in fraud.

Daniel Dunglas Home

Another remarkable medium of his time was Daniel Dunglas Home, who was a Scottish medium that was considered to be one of the finest physical mediums of his time and was witnessed to have levitated many times during séances. Like Piper, Daniel was never found fraudulent even though there were claims of fraud. The claims were often unfounded and the result of 3rd party gossip.

Real Evidential Mediumship

Real evidential mediumship is characterized by the delivery of specific, verifiable information that could not have been known to the medium through ordinary means. This includes details such as names, dates, personal anecdotes, and other precise facts that are unique to the spirit being communicated with. The accuracy of these details often provides comfort and validation to those seeking connection with their loved ones who have passed on. Furthermore, authentic evidential mediums typically demonstrate a consistent ability to produce such evidence across multiple readings and clients, which helps distinguish genuine practitioners from those relying on generalities or cold reading techniques.

evidential mediumship

Examples Of Communication

Consider the following two messages and identify what you perceive to be the best type of validation:

First Medium: “I have a father figure here, and he is coming around you with a great deal of love. He passed with a heart or chest condition. He is saying that you were very special to him and that you found it difficult when he passed. He is about 5 ft 10 and a bit rotund, wears glasses and smokes, and has a great personality. He says sorry for what you went through and identifies that you stepped up to help the family. You could always wrap him round your finger and that he would give you anything he could. He is strong in stature and looks like a powerful man. Do you understand?”

This message is perceived by many as good, and the sitter feels validated because certain pieces of information have been covered – especially if they are grieving badly and reaching for anything. Due to the sitter’s need to hear the information, they accept it and begin to open up more – offering leading answers that feed the medium such as, “yes he had a heart attack, and I was the one dealing with everything”.

Second Example

The medium confirms that is what they were getting and feels good because they think they have a hit. The reality is that the medium has offered no real evidence for the grieving individual.

Second Medium: I have a male figure coming through with the name Micheal and what sounds like Thompson or Johnson. He says thank you for talking with him when you were walking through the park yesterday and that you thought about him when you stood by the bed of flowers with the statue in the middle. He also says that you were in a store like Macy’s, and you nearly bought a new pair of shoes but changed your mind, placing them back. He often comes around you and notes that he was with you when you were mending the chair that you recently broke in the kitchen. He was trying to tell you how to do it and laughs at your attempt. He mentions the name Mateo or a name that sounds like this, and also I have to give you Anaheim road or place. Can you understand this? He also tells me that you have an anniversary in July and another on the 5th May. He wants to send love to his wife and the name I am given is Mary. He also shows me that you have his watch with you now. Can you accept that?

Validation

If this information is validated by the sitter in its entirety or at least 80%, it would be considered as stronger evidence; even better, if more evidence is given that the sitter can’t validate until much later by a third party. This would suggest the sitter had no knowledge of the imparted information and would have to wait until it was validated by a third party, thus suggesting the information could only have been derived from a communicating entity that previously knew the third party.

Considerations

Obviously, how one delivers this type of message has some bearing on how the evidence is offered, but generally, there should be no questions or assumptions. The medium should be able to give the name or a name that is as close as possible. It is not good practice to throw out a random letter unless the evidence that supports it is overwhelming. Like a jigsaw puzzle or a map, the evidence will be a unique and precise part of a larger story. As human beings, we are built for story telling and its how we communicate and learn. This is no different in the world of spirit. The evidence is often built upon stories that come together to make a cohesive evidence trail.

Inadequately Trained Working Mediums Risk Early Failure

Many inexperienced individuals that claim to be spiritual mediums, choose to work with clients or give public demonstrations long before they are ready, and risk becoming unbalanced very quickly. They get caught up with their own egos and also fall into the trap of feeding from the sitter, jumping on with link stealers and making what they believe is evidence, fit. This has been exemplified by well known mediums in the spotlight who are dismally unprofessional, but got the break because they know someone who knows someone.

This is true in all forms of mediumship. A consequence of media and ignorance of the mechanics, and having never received professional training in delivering messages or etiquette on how to act and work as a professional medium. In these circumstances, failure has a tendency to loom and skeptics lurk like hungry hyenas waiting to pounce on their next meal. Moreover, the damage that can be done to someone who is on a grieving journey is unimaginable.

A Medium’s Responsibility

It is a great responsibility to do the work of a professional medium. Therefore, you should be appropriately prepared and trained to operate within the highest standards possible and know what constitutes good evidence. There are many organizations that exist to test, validate, and investigate mediumship. Organizations such as the Windbridge Institute, ISSMPI and the Forever Family Foundation share a common goal of encouraging professional mediumship standards.

Unfortunately, there are many individuals who remain deluded and do not understand real mediumship nor the mechanics, such as knowing the difference between spirit contact and reading psychic energy. They promote themselves as mediums but have no prior history or training. They have no idea of real mediumship and are often giving misleading or false information. They may well have a good heart and want to help, but just do not have the ability to communicate with spirit.

From time to time, even professional mediums will not be able to communicate consistently. This can be due to personal circumstances, the conditions and the needs of the sitter. However, it is important to recognize real mediumship for what it is.

Take these notes on board when looking for a medium

  1. Always try to identify with a professional medium who has a relevant history and experience.
  2. Check the testimonials. If you have been recommended by someone - even better.
  3. If the medium asks too many questions before the appointment, leave well alone.
  4. Do not feed the medium information.
  5. Check if the medium is involved with professional organizations or has served in spiritualist churches.
  6. If you are not sure, ask if you can approach any of the testimonial authors. If this is possible, the medium should put you in touch with a couple of people who will validate them.
  7. A professional medium should never tell you negative things and if you are faced with someone who tells you that they can sort out your life, bring your lover back or clear a curse – run and run far. Remember there is really no such thing as ‘Best Psychic Mediums’ but there are great evidential mediums to be found.

Our Most Reverend Lyn Gibb de Swarte’s Evidential Messages from Harry Houdini

It was my great privilege to have interviewed on my radio show, the Most Reverend Lyn Gibb de Swarte, who gave evidence from Harry Houdini.

A Most Distinguished Career

Lyn has enjoyed a most distinguished career in whatever path she followed; from ice skater and author to journalist and editor of Psychic News for seven years.

Being a mental and physical medium and healer, she founded the “New Christian Spiritualists Society.” She is also known for presenting astounding evidence from famed illusionist and escapologist, Harry Houdini.

Mediums are Constantly on Trial

I feel blessed to have read Lyn’s front page article in the March issue 282 of Psychic World about one of my favourite subjects: “Mediums are constantly on trial”.

It is sadly a fact that we often feel that we have to constantly prove ourselves because of those in power, despite governments and other institutions spending millions on covertly weaponizing proven psychic and spiritual practices.

Reverend Lyn’s article also covered The Witchcraft Act and the fact that renowned physical medium Helen Duncan was tried under it. She describes how many Spiritualist mediums were hauled in front of the courts under dubious charges.

Skeptics Are Quieter Now

Thankfully, many skeptics have been quiet about the concept of life after death for a long time. Hard evidence, scientific and otherwise, has mounted up to such a degree over the years, that it would probably be quite humiliating to try to prove otherwise.

Unlike other religions, it is amazing to think that Spiritualism, can be repeatedly humiliated by accusations of fraud. Yes, there have been some instances but not as many as people may have been led to think.

Spiritualism has attracted a barrage of unwanted fraud allegations and medium bashing, with repetitive calls to “prove it.” No other religion is so berated for its views. But perhaps that’s because we can prove that there is life after death.

No Cries for Other Religions to Prove Life After Death. Why?

We don’t hear cries of “prove it” thrown at the Catholic church, Islam, Buddhism or any other religion. Why is that? Possibly because there would be serious backlash. I mean, how dare they attack religion?

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Spiritualism can and does prove the reality of life after death, and that communication with spirit through skilled mediums is most certainly real and supported by science. That in itself may be considered by some to be a very dangerous thing for people to understand.

If people can see that we are ultimately free with god given, inherent rights … mass free thinking would most likely create potential carnage for the self-appointed ruling classes.

Rev Lyn Recalls Harry Houdini’s Last Official Séance

Another fascinating aspect of the article was that Lyn was involved in the last official Harry Houdini séance of the 20th century. It was filmed by an Italian production company but never ever aired.

My personal theory is that Harry Houdini (without being named by Lyn) provided substantial evidence that he was there but skeptics and the like didn’t want the footage to be shown.

For about an hour, Lyn conveyed information about Houdini that she received via her helper on the other side, Doris Stokes. Houdini himself spoke to her as Eric (his real name).

Lyn explained that toward the end of the séance, Houdini asked her several times to say that “It was all done by mirrors.” Initially, she flatly refused, as she knew that the audience members were all professional magicians, and mirrors were the stock-in-trade for many. But she eventually agreed and said, “The gentleman who is here wants me to say that it is all done by mirrors.

At the end, Houdini Museum curator Sydney Radnor, now in spirit, gave a positive speech that included reference to the séance, which surprised her. He also stated that he had some gifts to share and “they were not to be opened until you got home”. They were created by a craftsman in great secrecy.

Unsurpassed Evidence from "Eric" in the Statement About Mirrors

As Sydney passed around the boxed gifts, Lyn did wonder about the praise she received. Sydney’s stage name was Rendar the Magician and she later learned he was trained by Houdini’s brother.

When Lyn got home, she unwrapped the present. It was a small replica of a magician's triple mirror which allowed the reflection of an object and made it ‘magically’ appear and disappear.

This was another form of proof of Harry Houdini’s presence and that his intention to reveal information was clearly evident.

Why the Silence Surrounding Houdini’s Presence?

The seance was never mentioned anywhere and as I previously stated, the film was never aired or shown. I dare say that skeptics would not appreciate it if the evidence produced that night, came to light.

It is of course, deemed as ‘dangerous evidence’ by those who would prefer hold the truth from us.

The Spiritualist’s Handbook

Lyn is also an author and has written the brilliant “The Spiritualist’s Handbook,” a concise and extensive guide to Spiritualism and all its practices.
