The Blood Curdling History of Haunted Souter Lighthouse

Whenever people think of creepy hauntings or grizzly tales, references to decrepit graveyards or famous war sites are often made. Other popular locations for all things spine-tingling are Victorian manors and desolate farmhouses. Unsurprisingly, medieval castles and eerie forests are also favorites for housing a spook or two. All over the world, morbid history and blood-chilling tales have been attached to homes of all shapes and sizes and even land. But what about lighthouses? Most people will struggle to think of a haunted lighthouse; it isn’t difficult to see why.

Lighthouses sit quietly, peacefully governing the shores below. Comforting beams of light give guidance and hope to tormented sailors whose ships thrash among unforgiving waves. Lighthouses are helpful. These beacons of light are a far cry from the rotten inventions and structures carved by man’s hand to wreak havoc upon the world. Despite this, haunted lighthouses do exist. Prepare to have your eyes opened and blood curdled as you digest the haunted history of Souter Lighthouse...

From The Darkness Came the Lighthouse!

souter lighthouse

The majestic structure that is Souter Lighthouse sits proudly atop the clifftops of South Shields and keeps a watchful eye over the beautiful surrounding coastline. South Shields is a town famous for innovation in shipbuilding and boasts an array of other maritime successes.

Once a bustling shore packed with merchant vessels, fishing boats, and the occasional Royal Navy fighter ship, accidents were never far away. In 1860, at least twenty shipwrecks were reported. The loss of life was intense and South Shields quickly gained notoriety as the most dangerous coastline in Britain. The jagged rocks, relentless storms, and fogs as thick as curdled milk sat like giant webs, ready to decimate anything that dared to venture too close.

Sinking Ships

One famous incident that defied the monstrous shores, was the sinking of the Forfarshire passenger ship. in 1838, Grace Darling, a 26-year-old local woman, whose father was a lighthouse keeper, heroically battled the storms in a fishing boat and fought her way toward the floundering wreck, and saved the lives of 62 people. Grace was honored with a silver medal and became a local hero.

Although Grace’s actions countered the negative reputation of the disastrous coastline, a dark cloud of despair remained. The overbearing list of deaths and destruction weighed heavy upon the town’s shoulders. As a result of these horrifying catastrophes, trade began to dwindle but this economic concern became the catalyst for the existence of this wonderful lighthouse that sits there today. Construction was completed in 1871.

The 75-foot-high structure was built by an accomplished engineer called Robert Allison and would become the first lighthouse in the world to be powered by electricity. It was thought that this innovative technological advancement would bring popularity, respect, and a higher flow of trade to the town and surrounding shores. More importantly, lives would be saved.

The constant glaring light would act as a beacon of warmth and warning, preventing ships in the night from floating into death’s eternal clutch. The main hope was that South Shields could finally eradicate its reputation of coastal disasters and revamp itself as a significantly less formidable place of trade. In the coming years, Souter Lighthouse justified its construction and money spent, and tumultuous incidents became sporadic. Trade boomed once more and local well-being was restored.

Madness Within The Haunted Lighthouse Walls

Souter Lighthouse was working well. Manned with an experienced lighthouse keeper, the glaring light comforted and guided every vessel and sailor for miles around. While locals slept soundly, the isolated keeper monitored the huge light all hours of the night while his family slept in the quarters close by. The light was made from 4.5 tonnes of glass that sat upon 1.5 tons of mercury. The shores remained tranquil for a while but it wasn’t long before bad luck and destruction returned.

As the days and nights passed, the lighthouse keeper slowly began to change. His moods became erratic and bizarre behaviors began to ensue. Before long, the keeper was gnawing at his flesh, tearing handfuls of hair from his scalp, and mercilessly pounding his face and head against the windows of the watch tower. One evening, a fisherman witnessed these events and ran to investigate, thinking the keeper was being attacked. Upon inspection, it was clear that the keeper and the keeper alone was responsible. He was moved to a local asylum and certified insane. Later inspection revealed that the seeping mercury below the light had been responsible for the lightkeeper’s brush with madness.

To this very day, people have reported shrill cries emitting from the lighthouse watch tower and some have reported witnessing the transparent figure of a man mutilating himself before disappearing into the darkness.

A Mysterious Death

Many years ago, a man known as John would regularly visit the lighthouse. He could be seen sitting outside on the grass, staring aimlessly out to sea. He would occasionally leave his grassy spot to wander the gravel paths outside the lighthouse and the keeper’s lodgings. The lighthouse grounds were a dedicated right of way for the general public with a museum inside, so nobody ever thought to question the strange man.

Those who saw the man would report darkness in his eyes and an unusual energy seemed to penetrate the air whenever he was near. One staff member recalled walking past the man and as she brushed shoulders with him, she felt a dark and evil presence engulf her. All the hairs raised on the back of her neck and arms. When she looked at him, his eyes were as black as night, his grin wide and evil.

Eventually, things took a sinister turn. One morning, the lighthouse keeper was conducting his rounds. Upon entering the engine room, he found the man dead. An investigation was launched and no foul play or suicide was determined. The reason for the man’s death remains unknown. Even after an autopsy, no solid conclusion was passed. Many people are convinced that an evil presence that lurks in the lighthouse is responsible. Whatever the cause, we will never truly know.

The Phantom Haunted Lighthouse Keeper

For decades, a tall man has been seen wandering the lighthouse grounds. He is always described as wearing a blue peaked cap and a thick blue trench coat with chunky brass buttons fastened from the bottom right up to the collar. This was the common uniform worn by lighthouse keepers in the 1800s. He is said to have a long, drawn, pale face, wearing an expression of tiredness and grief. He makes no sound and only walks a few steps before disappearing silently into thin air. Staff and visitors have reported that just before the lighthouse keeper appears, an eerily still and creepy vibe penetrates the area.

One of the more recent terrifying incidents involved an office worker. At 10 pm, she began to lock up for the evening. She heard a succession of taps on the window behind her. Knowing she was alone, she turned around and was startled by what she saw. Staring at her through the class, was the face of the lighthouse keeper. He fitted the descriptions of all who had seen him over the years. Frozen with fear, the office worker watched in horror as the drab face slowly faded away, leaving her alone once more.

The Ghost Of Isabella Darling

Isabella Darling was the niece of Grace Darling, the maritime heroine mentioned earlier in the article. Her father was the keeper of Souter Lighthouse for ten years from 1881 to 1891. Could the phantom lighthouse keeper be the spirit of Isabella’s father? Scores of people have reported seeing the spectral image of Isabelle roaming around the lighthouse gardens and picking flowers as she did in life.

Isabelle’s spirit has also been seen and heard wandering up and down the lighthouse staircase, accompanied by the swishing of her long flowing dress. Isabelle’s spirit is non-threatening and it is said that she remains to keep a watchful eye over her beloved lighthouse. Isabelle was said to have been an avid cook in life and loved concocting a wide array of delicious food for her friends and family in the lighthouse kitchen. In the dead of night, anybody walking past the kitchen can sometimes hear the clanking of pots and pans, gleeful whistling, and the smell of cooking. When people investigate further, all the noises and smells cease, leaving the kitchen quiet once more.

The Playful Poltergeist

After recent building work took place, paranormal activity increased throughout the lighthouse and lodgings. Personal belongings and objects such as tools, clothing, and cutlery would mysteriously disappear and reappear in inconspicuous places, sometimes weeks after they had vanished. Cold spots would appear around the lighthouse and many staff and visitors likened the coldness to ‘walking into a freezer’.

The poltergeist has never been described as malevolent but rather immature and ‘irritating’ in nature, very much like a bored child seeking attention at a busy family party. Staff and visitors have also reported a feeling of being watched. Invisible hands regularly grab arms and clothing and pull people’s hair. A lot of poltergeist activity is witnessed in the kitchen area and involves the levitation of spoons, and the opening and closing of drawers and cupboards. Taps mysteriously turn on and off by themselves and the coal fire has been known to ignite itself.

The engine room is also rife with poltergeist activity. Machines are reported to turn on and off by themselves and banging on the windows and doors can be heard by engineers who are trying to work. One Engineer reported seeing a dark figure standing to his right. When he turned, he saw the short, dark figure quickly scurry out of view behind the machinery. When the engineer investigated further, nobody was found. Many people think the poltergeist could be the spirit of a child who lived at the lighthouse many years ago and was tragically killed by falling off the nearby cliff while playing with friends. Whatever or whoever is responsible for the activity, is keeping a stern but friendly eye on the lighthouse.

Personal Experience

The Souter Lighthouse is now owned by the National Trust and daily tours allow visitors to see the preserved lodgings and lighthouse. Everything remains largely unchanged and many visitors liken their visit to ‘stepping back in time’. I was lucky enough to enjoy such a visit when I was eight years old. I remember walking into the keeper’s lodgings and listening to the guide telling our group about the daily duties of the lighthouse keeper and how his family would spend their lives in those rooms.

The impressive old living room had an open coal fire, stone floors covered with rugs, a kitchen table, and a cooking area adorned with brass pots, pans, and cooking utensils. In the center of the room, an old rocking chair faced the fire. It was easy to imagine a weary lighthouse keeper sitting in the chair, rocking back and forth as he stared into the glowing embers of the fire on a cold winter night.

The Haunted Rocking Chair

When the tour guide had finished talking, he gestured to the next room and the group slowly made their way out. Being the last person in the room, as I began to leave, I saw the old rocking chair tip forward slightly, roll backward, and then halt in a stationary position. My blood ran cold and an overwhelming sense of dread washed over me. Without thinking, I charged out of the room and joined the rest of the group in the next room. The experience shook me terribly and I shared what I had witnessed with my parents and the tour guide. The guide explained that the ‘rocking chair movement’ was a regularly reported phenomenon and that he had witnessed it many times himself.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a trip to Souter Lighthouse is highly recommended. You will enjoy an important part of Northern England’s maritime history that has been wonderfully preserved. If you do happen to see the spectral lighthouse keeper, remember to thank him for his hard work!

Pest Control Professionals or Paranormal Experts: Who to Call?

The things you have arranged properly are now misplaced. The food you have left on your table goes missing. The noises you hear have you in fear. You wake up at night after hearing the scratching noises in your bedroom. With all these spooky things going on, you are convinced that a spirit or ghost is haunting you. You call in paranormal experts, but is that the right expert to call?

Is your home haunted by a poltergeist?

Disturbing occurrences in your home can make you feel terrified. You may immediately think that a poltergeist is haunting your home. It happens nightly and so you call in a team of paranormal experts to get rid of the foul spirit.

Ghost lore describes a poltergeist as a spirit that makes loud noises and moves and destroys objects. Poltergeists are known to be loud. After all, poltergeists are scary than other types of spirits. They make their presence felt.

According to William G. Roll and Nandor Fodor who are both renowned parapsychologists, psychokinesis can explain poltergeist activity. Seeing broken objects or stuff at home without a logical explanation can easily convince you that you are being haunted by one.

Poltergeists are known to haunt an individual instead of a place. If you are aware of their existence, it is easy to conclude that poltergeists are the reason for all the loud noises and stuff that go awry whenever you’re not around.

Are pests to be blamed?

pest control
Pests not Ghosts

Before you book an appointment with a team of paranormal experts, consider checking if your home is infested with pests. What you thought are the sounds caused by poltergeists may be created by pests that lurk in your home especially at night.

The common pests that can mimic ghostly encounters would be;

Your home can easily be transformed into a haunted house if these pests continue to thrive inside your home environment. So it’s not so much a paranormal expert you need, its more a pest control company or pest control expert you need.

House pests don’t only cause damage to your home. They are known to be carriers of diseases so you are exposed to health risks. But the damage they do mimic the haunting noises that you would equate with haunted houses.

There are reasons why these unwanted visitors are attracted to your homes. Pests tend to go to places where they can hide and look for food. They flock to homes that are often left damp, dirty, and old. Does that sound familiar? Yes they are attracted to haunted type homes.

Paranormal Phenomena or Pest Phenomena?

Your home shows signs of deterioration as it ages. Rats and other rodents can make the signs even worse. They love to chew pipes and wires, and they have a knack for destroying your floors and insulation. These crack, break and cause paranormal type phenomena.

Termites will chew on rotten wood structures inside your home, and it isn’t easy to spot them. Eventually, all these pests can destroy your home whilst mimicking the sounds of the dead and the specters of the night.

Who you gonna call?

Paranormal Investigators will often come into your home, they will interview you and try to identify the ghostly phenomena, and most of them will settle on feeding the fear or their own ego. Eventually it will be announced that you have a demonic infestation or you have the spirits of the dead making communication with you. Very rarely do they consider that what you may have is a pest problem.

Instead of banishing spirits away from your home, what you need is pest control. There are some ways you can look into to make sure pests don’t invade your home.

Poltergeist Fire Starters — Could be rodents?

The sounds you hear at night may be caused by rodents so you need to check every corner of your home. Rats can easily get into your homes through small openings or get into your hvac system through the ducts by chewing their way through or badly fitted ducts.. They will then chew on wires and exposed power sources or if they get into those power sources they will nest in there.

According to parapsychologists, there is a type of typical type phenomena where a poltergeist will start fires. This can be understood as a Pyrophillia type behavior where the spirit or specter gets its kicks from starting fires. It is also known as pyrokinesis, which is controlling fire with one's mind, and in this respect, it would be the mind of the disembodied spirit.

The reality is of course in most cases, that your fire starting ghost is nothing more than a rodent or animal of some description that has damaged or eaten through live wires and this exposure causes spontaneous fires to occur.

The only time that you could possibly consider something remotely paranormal is because of the other intelligent phenomena that is measured and has no basis of science behind it.

Check your crawl spaces for ghosts.

Termites enjoy feeding on rotten wood. The wooden structures in your crawl space can be a breeding ground for termites. Inspect your crawl space to ensure that there is no water damage. That alone can also cause certain paranormal phenomena coupled with the termites and termite damage, you have a possible ghostly infestation.

Tips For Your Home

Inspect holes and openings and cover them if necessary. You can also screen your chimneys and make sure that they are securely covered to avoid pests from entering your homes.

According to Missy Henriksen of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), you should use caulk to seal the gaps or cracks in your home and use weather strips on your windows as well.

Book professional pest control services before Paranormal Experts.

Before you call out your local paranormal team or paranormal investigator, you should perhaps call on your local pest control company first. Of course, that is only should your home be lived in, exhibiting the signs, and not an old abandoned home that has been left to the spirits of the dead. If the latter is true, then call on a paranormal expert.

The Scientific Investigation of Poltergeists

This is a story of a phenomena that at first glance looks like a bunch of wild stories. A poltergeist might be depicted as a demon, or it might be believed to be a haunting of a ghost or even a curse. The truth about poltergeist activity though, couldn’t be more different.

poltergeist

A lot of the confusion comes from the controversy about whether this phenomena even happens at all and of course, skepticism abounds. Wikipedia, where objectivity about the paranormal goes to die, treats the subject with distain and cites claims that it’s basically all hoaxing. Is this really a good explanation though?

Is Hoaxing a Good Explanation?

If we look at this carefully enough, hoaxing might be a good explanation once in a while, but if you review the history of poltergeist research instead of narrowly focusing on a single case, hoaxing becomes very unlikely as a catch-all explanation. To understand why, a little history is in order. Poltergeist activity is extremely rare, but it is also so unusual that people throughout history have taken note of it and written about it.

Written accounts can be found throughout the historical record, with varying levels of detail dating back to the Ravenna case of 530AD. A fairly decently explored case involved French nuns in a monastery in Lyons in 1526. One of the first scientists to explore poltergeist accounts was Robert Boyle, a chemist that was a member of the Royal Society. That was in 1642. One of the first thorough investigations took place in 1689 by a chaplain and fellow of the Royal Society of Great Britain. It centered around drumming noises in the home of John Mompresson.

With the creation of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882, a far more organized investigation of poltergeist cases began, so that it was possible in 1979 for scientists Alan Gauld and Tony Cornell to review 500 of them -almost a hundred years later.

Everyone is Skeptical of Poltergeist Activity

You have to keep in mind that hoaxing is the FIRST thing EVERYONE suspects and the second thing that comes to everyone’s mind is either lying or wishful thinking. This skepticism is even more pronounced for serious investigators when they are examining a new case. There are many documented instances through history where accusations of hoaxing were the starting point and investigators were only contacted after this was ruled out.

It’s not that people actively disbelieve the existence of poltergeist activity, (although many do), it’s just that almost everyone gravitates to the most likely explanations. Barry Taff, who followed up on a mind boggling 4,700 leads, compared finding poltergeist activity to going to an airport in hopes of filming a plane crash.

The Challenges of Poltergeist Investigations

Serious poltergeist investigators have a lot of experience of failing to find poltergeist activity. Typical activity might only last a few days or weeks and be gone by the time the investigators hear about it. On top of that, gaining access is complicated by tense family situations (which are common in poltergeist cases) and the odd hours that poltergeist activity tends to occur. Even if they suspect that they’ve found a real case, they can’t always study it.

They may also find themselves fending off local amateur investigators who found out about the case, which often places them in the position of having to evaluate the reliability of claims that they only heard about second hand.

Hoaxes depend on people believing what they want to believe and ignoring evidence to the contrary. They generally don’t work when the person you’re trying to hoax is suspicious right out of the gate. Hoaxing a suspicious person who doesn’t believe you and treats all evidence with suspicion is extraordinarily difficult to pull off. You need a skill level which few people possess. When something interesting does happen, they immediately take steps to rule out ordinary causes and don’t assume anything.

Is the Poltergeist a Living Person or Discarnate Intelligence?

As early as 1911, researchers started to notice that the vast majority of poltergeist activity centered around a single living person and, in the intervening years, more evidence has pointed to this theory. While scientists have not abandoned the idea of a discarnate intelligence interacting with the physical world, they have focused most of their attention on poltergeist activity that is generated by a living person who possesses no conscious control over it.

Because there are occasional cases where it appears that discarnate intelligence is involved, this model of poltergeist activity cannot be ruled out. These cases, though, are rare in a field where all cases are rare. It is hard to study with so little data.

Poltergeist activity is generally purposeless. That is to say, if there is any coherent intent to the strange knocks, stuff falling off shelves, tables rocking, etc. that intent is not clear enough for anyone to recognize it except in rare cases. Researchers have found that strong emotions play a part in many poltergeist cases, which points towards a living subconscious mind acting out primal emotions through highly visible, yet poorly understood external actions at a distance.

Another reason why researchers believe that a human is involved is that other research into psychokinesis has demonstrated that people can indeed mentally affect objects. The effect is far larger in poltergeist cases, but it is essentially the same thing.

On the other hand, if you have the same discussion with an authentic spiritual medium, they would most likely be of the opinion that even by today’s modern theories, this is still a theory based on measurement rather than evidence and that poltergeist cases do have intelligence behind them. A topic to further explore in a future article.

The acronym RSPK is used a lot in the literature. It means Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis, which refers to poltergeist activity. The people themselves are referred to by the acronym PGA’s, or poltergeist agents.

The Emotional Aspect to Poltergeist Activity

Here’s an interesting fact. Prior to 1900, about 3/4 of all poltergeist agents were women and they outnumbered the men but this changed over time and now it’s about 50/50. The speculation is that women had things a lot tougher, were more suppressed and this led to more poltergeist activity.

This emotional aspect, William Roll noted, is a common theme. In genuine poltergeist cases, poltergeist agents with suppressed anger toward individuals with whom they had frequent contact, comes up frequently. Lloyd Auerbach noted that poltergeist activity seems to occur as a substitute for throwing things or punching something. The subconscious is apparently acting out.

The Seizure Connection

Barry Taff has proposed another unusual aspect of poltergeist cases: according to him, they are almost always associated with seizures or epilepsy. But the reverse does not hold true. People who experience seizures or epilepsy are not prone to poltergeist activity. Something else, an X factor, is involved in which these medical conditions play a part.

When it comes to objects moving around, some of the things that happen require a lot of energy, and it’s not at all clear where this energy comes from. Is the cold air sometimes associated with poltergeist activity the result of a thermal reaction?

Are There Unknown Physics Involved?

During psychokinesis experiments, test subjects get tired from the exertion, but in poltergeist cases, this doesn’t happen to the PGAs although there is a LOT more energy being used. Somehow, the subconscious intent does not translate into an expenditure of energy by the individual. How does this happen? No one knows.

In the rather well known Miami case, the strength of the psychokinetic effect by distance from the poltergeist agent was mapped by Roll and Joines. This was replicated in six other cases.

poltergeist activity
Plot of Joines’ decline function against the pattern of object movements with distance from Julio
observed in the Miami poltergeist case. Reproduced from data and equations given in Roll and Joines (2001) http://publicparapsychology.org/Public%20Parapsych/Poltergeist%20Phenomena%20Primer%20Final.pdf

This chart may not look like much, but it shows something really important. It shows a decline that is very similar to the inverse square and exponential decay
functions. (e.g. if you have a unit of distance from a light source, the light will dim by the square of that distance. The same law appears to apply to poltergeist psychokinetic activity.)

This chart is showing that poltergeist activity appears to be following normal, known, scientific principles. That’s a very big deal because it means that it’s almost a certainty that there’s a very real energetic process at work, even if we don’t know what it is.

One possible clue as to the nature of the energy is that cases tend to occur or increase in intensity in correlation with increases in geomagnetic activity. (Subtle magnetic fields come up quite frequently in psi research.) One other thing we know from a medium’s perspective is that spirits can and will use all the energy available, which includes geomagnetic energy. It also should be noted, the need for moisture and the phenomenon of water in poltergeist activity.

Examining Poltergeist Rapping Noises

When rapping noises are created by poltergeist activity, they are different from normal rapping, as seen in this sound chart from the Enfield case.

https://europaranormal.com/evidence-for-psi/poltergeist-knocks/

The sounds are being created by means other than an ordinary knock, but they’re close enough to sound the same to a human ear.

What Can Be Learned?

By any scientific standard, poltergeist activity is worth investigating. There is a lot to learn going forward and it has the potential to lead to truly breathtaking leaps in science. Discovering the force that’s moving objects or creating sounds at a distance is something unique and important in the world of physics. It’s amazing enough that it originates from a human being, but still more incredible is an undiscovered way to harness and focus energy.

There’s something extremely important hidden in the mysteries of a rare and highly unusual phenomena known by the name poltergeist.
