There has been much written and documented about Leslie Flint. For example, how he was the most tested medium of his day by researchers and found to be 100% genuine. But this account is about our experience with him and I feel no need to go into other areas, as they can easily researched if needed.
Leslie Flint’s Direct Voice séances were wonderful and we learned so much. One very interesting point is that the voice actually moved around the room. As Mickey, or whoever was talking at the time, went to someone else, you could hear that the voice was further down the room. This does not come through on the audio recordings, unfortunately.
Some are going to ask, did anyone famous come through? Well yes, a few did. Elizabeth Garret Anderson (1836-1917), who started the first hospital for women. Nellie Wallace (1870-1948), the old Music Hall star known as ‘The Essence of Eccentricity’.
How we discovered Leslie Flint
It is hard to know exactly where to start, as not only was it so long ago, but things happened in a certain manner before we actually went to Leslie Flint’s séance for the first time.
Early in 1981, my wife Wendy and I opened the back room of our flat as a healing sanctuary. We were the first ones to actually do this outside of the Spiritualist churches, in our area of Great Yarmouth, anyway. It was a great success and every Thursday evening we would work until nearly midnight on some occasions.
A widower called John that we got to know at our local church became so interested in what we were doing that we offered to train him as a healer. Not long after that, we began to work with a new patient, a lady from Lowestoft in East Suffolk whose name was Jo. After our first healing session, she asked if she could come again the following week. We said of course, that is why we are here, you don’t need to ask.
Jo told us that she moved down to Lowestoft after losing her husband Les, who had himself been a healer. She went on to say that she was thinking of moving back to where she had come from as she found the local people not to be very friendly and was feeling a bit disillusioned. But she said that we were like a warm breath of fresh air as we were so friendly in welcoming her. She started to come and see us each week and also got to know John, who lost his wife Jean about a year earlier. They became friends and later married.
During this time, Jo regaled us with stories of Leslie Flint and lent us her signed copy of his autobiography Voices in the Dark. She naturally treasured her book but entrusted us with it and said, “I must have it back, but will buy you a copy for Christmas.” True to her word, her gifted book is now one of our valued possessions.
Leslie Flint
One day she said, “Would you all like to go to Leslie Flint’s for a Direct Voice séance”? We jumped at the idea. She said that Leslie, by that time, was actually retired and only did séances occasionally for people he knew or who had previously attended. As Jo had been before, Leslie knew he could trust her if she wanted to bring a group to see him.
She told us that Leslie only asked for a nominal charge of £6 per head which we could manage okay. But we would have to go by train from Great Yarmouth to Paddington which was a bit expensive for us. At that time we existed on a basic benefit, which was barely enough to keep soul and body together.
Then I had a thought. A couple of years previously I had bought an acoustic guitar, which I was vainly trying to learn to play. I had actually given up on that a while ago as I knew it was never going to happen. A friend’s daughter had expressed interest in buying it from me and I said she could have it for £25 which was half of what I had paid for it. She readily agreed, and the sale covered our train fare and a meal.
Jo arranged things with Leslie, and our séance was booked for 2nd June 1982. It was a three hour journey to Paddington and we had to get up very early on the day. We piled out of bed at 5am to get ready to catch the train. Our little flat was full of the atmosphere of expectancy. It was as though our spirit friends already knew of our visit and what was awaiting us.
As I walked into our front room, all of Wendy’s ornaments were pinging like crazy. We both stopped in our tracks and listened as they went ping, ping, ping for a few minutes, or so it seemed. We were so enthralled by it all that time seemed to stand still for awhile.
We went into the kitchen to make a pot of tea, where Wendy had an indoor washing line set up. She gets a bit embarrassed when I tell folk about this next bit. There was only one item of clothing on the washing line and it was part of Wendy’s underwear. Well, the washing line was going crazy, pinging up and down with quite a force, and there was the item belonging to Wendy going up and down with it. Once again we were truly amazed. When all was still again, I tried to emulate it by pinging the line myself but it just wasn’t the same. When spirit does something, it can’t be imitated
Meeting Leslie Flint
We set off on our journey full of excitement and expectancy at what we were, hopefully, going to experience that day. Jo told us that Leslie had managed to fit us in with another group who were also booked that day. It didn’t matter. We were just excited at the prospect of going at all.
He had to leave the room for a while and when he was gone, Wendy thought she would looke under the cinema seats to see if there was anything untoward there. Leslie came back while she was still looking! He wasn’t offended in the least. In fact he said: “Go on look everywhere; satisfy yourself that everything is as it should be.”
Leslie Flint was waiting for us when we entered the room. Being polite, I said, “My name is Robin and this is...” That’s when Leslie said, “NO, don’t tell me names. It won’t be evidential if I know all your names.”
He had to leave the room for a while and when he was gone, Wendy looked under the cinema seats to see if there was anything untoward there, and Leslie returned while she was still looking! He wasn’t offended in the least. In fact he said: “Go on look everywhere; satisfy yourself that everything is as it should be.”
He even told her to go and look in the projector room where the film machinery was. So she did and found nothing wrong there, either.
Most of our group and the other guests sat themselves in the cinema seats. For some reason, I had spied a piano near the corner of the room and Wendy and I sat down beside that so we were a bit separate from the others. Then the lights went out and we were sitting in total blackness. Leslie told us to just to talk normally amongst ourselves, and to him, of course. Keep it light hearted and laughter will help. I can’t recall exactly how long it was we chatted away; it may have been around half an hour or maybe a bit more.
Then Mickey started to speak. It is almost impossible to say what happened in detail as it was so long ago but here is a link to that séance so you can all hear it for yourselves. But I can tell you this, it was truly wonderful.
Our first séance
After our first séance, Leslie knew we could be trusted and agreed that we could bring a group to see him on our own.
Our next séance was arranged for 10th November 1983. This time, we travelled to Paddington by road. We had made friends with a chap called Brian through a local charity that we were both helping with at the time. When we told him of our first séance with Leslie Flint, he was interested in coming along to the next one. Brian had a large Mercedes van that he used to take disabled people around in and offered to take us all in that to see Leslie. So we took our circle members with us for our second visit.
Our second séance
Everyone enjoyed it so much we all decided that would love to go again, so we arranged once more to go on 11th July 1984. Once again, Brian took us all in his vehicle.
Our third séance
We went to Leslie’s for a fourth time, but I can’t recall the date. The reason may be that it was a dud. Nothing happened at all. We must have sat there in the darkness for around two hours when Leslie called it a day. He was so sorry, full of apologies that nothing had happened, what with us coming all that way. But you see, dear Leslie was getting on a bit and he couldn’t guarantee a result. He said it was happening more often and that his own energies weren’t sufficient on that day. Of course we were disappointed but we had a lovely talk with him while we were waiting for the séance that was never destined to start that day.
We were all of good cheer though, and made an appointment for another visit which would take place on 1st October 1985. I have labelled this as our fourth séance because it was our fourth and final successful visit.
Our fourth séance
May I just add that for all these and other wonderful séances to be heard on YouTube, has been made possible by my good friend Jack Terrence Andrews who has so diligently uploaded them to his channel The Leslie Flint Trust. There you will hear many more recordings of the unique and wonderful Direct Voice mediumship of Leslie Flint.

This is a slightly humorous, Direct Voice afterlife recording of George Frederick Olsen who, as the title points out, felt more alive than he did during his life on earth. Recorded during a Leslie Flint séance in 1967, whilst it’s a good recording, it perhaps shouldn’t be shared publicly, as we do not wish to encourage suicide. The reason being, that in his joy and unbounded enthusiasm in what he finds on the other side, and in talking amongst friends, Mr Olsen shows how wonderful it is to be ‘dead’, and many of us know they are much more alive in that sphere than we are here. Better to take heed of the core message that knowledge of the afterlife is a saving grace when our time comes to transition from this earthly life.
With regard to suicide, as with everything else in spirit, it is a matter of degree. In a general sense, taking one’s own life is not considered a good thing but there are often many different mitigating circumstances surrounding this decision, and they are all taken into account on an individual basis when a person crosses over to the Spirit World. Some examples:
~ Those with severe mental illness and who are unable to comprehend reality, or terminal and extreme physical illness are treated very differently from those who either haphazardly cause their own demise or do it to escape consequences.
~ Those who give their lives for another under widely differing circumstances such as war, rescuing someone etc., are treated in yet a different way.
~ Those who take their own life for other reasons, know immediately upon crossing over that they have done wrong. They will have to make amends for their wrong doings, as will we all. None of us are perfect, otherwise we would not be here.
~ Those who perpetrate vile acts upon others including mass killings, will find themselves in a far different environment than they may have envisaged through their religious indoctrination.
Afterlife Recording with George Frederick Olsen
This Leslie Flint séance communication recording is one of thousands that were recorded by researchers Betty Greene and George Woods who worked together for over 20 years. Mr Olsen was an old friend of George Woods and they used to attend direct voice mediumship séances hosted by renowned British medium Leslie Flint (1911-1994) in the 1950s. Olsen’s passing was very sudden and after his first, rather short, direct voice communication, he returned on November 15, 1967 and provided far more detailed and insightful communication. On both occasions, the voice was identical.
During the recording he confirms many thought provoking things; in particular, something that spirit has always stated: that knowledge of spirit, however little, is of great help to those who pass. Even a small spark can help immensely because our loved ones and others can use that spark to help us, should we become confused or stuck momentarily. He also speaks of how religion can interfere with perception and progress, and how it can hold things up in spirit and how a strong sense national identity remains for a while but soon passes.
This particular recording ends abruptly, so I do apologize.
As always, light to all, Leo.

Betty Greene:Hello. Who’s that?
George Olsen: Good Lord, Olsen here!
George Woods: Oh, Mr. Olsen.
Betty Greene: Hello, Mr. Olsen.
Mr Olsen: How are you both?
George Woods: Oh, very well.
Betty Greene: Fine, thank you.
George Woods: And how are you getting on?
George Olsen: Very well, no regrets. I’m very happy, I wouldn’t come back if you offered me all the gold in China. I’m perfectly well, and perfectly happy, and I can’t tell you how marvellous it is to be dead!
George Woods: Well, I never!
George Olsen: I’ve never known – well, you know I was very interested in all this and I used to go to meetings –
Betty Greene: I’ve sat with you in this room…
George Olsen: I know, that’s a few years ago! My goodness me, people should think themselves lucky the day they kick the bucket!
George Woods: What are you doing Mr Olsen, on that side?
George Olsen: Oh I’m not doing anything in particular… Just, I s’pose everything is a matter of adjustment… and time but, I’m perfectly well and perfectly happy in my own way of life over here… Met all my people, lots of me old friends and companions y’know… I find it everything here so stimulating, so int’resting. You feel fit and well, and be able to get about, take an int’rest in things and people, and so many int’rests, George. Oh, you wait till you come here… I don’t know what you are waiting for… I don’t know what your staying there for…
George Woods: Well I have to do a lot of work…
George Olsen: Well, you’ll do a few years probably!
Betty Greene: Mr Olsen, what were your first feelings when you found yourself there?
George Olsen: Well, fortunately I knew quite a bit about it before I came. That was a great blessing and a great help, believe me it was… I was a bit, erm…. I s’pose like everyone must be... at first a bit… er shaken… in a way I s’pose, we have our own ideas… things what we been told… one way and another… I think the reality of it all, the naturalness of it all… was the thing that surprised me... I s’pose it shouldn’t have done but… it did.
Betty Greene: What sort of condition did you find yourself in? What sort of place?
George Olsen: Well, as far as I’m concerned, the place in which I found myself was, the nearest one can say, is like some country place. It could be anywhere in a sense. I mean, there were trees and the birds, and just as if one was waking up in a country village, although I realized in a sense, that very soon afterwards, thousands and thousands of people. Many, many I s’pose what you’d call apartment houses... vast buildings housing thousands of people – all sounds rather like a large council estate, but nothing like that really. They’re very beautiful, an extremely beautiful setting, a sort of wooden setting, beautiful scenery everywhere, even lakes, I mean... It was just as if you were waiting, as it were, in a kind of country setting, in the late summer… mmmm everything was… very quiet and peaceful and yet… once I realized there was a great deal of activity going on… there was no noise of any description. And the animals… you see many, many animals… particularly in regards to domestic animals… cats and pets that people have had on earth, y’know, they still have over here… They live in communities…
Arrival in the Spirit World
Things seem to come, as far as I can make out, to people… ermm through time… they don’t necessarily have them all at once… they are probably in sections… it was pretty obvious when a lot of people, when they first come, they need help and care and attention. They need to be sort of helped through, I s’pose, for many people a difficult situation or difficult period… they don’t all take to it I s’pose, in the beginning, the realization that they’re dead and that they’re separated from the certain people they’re close to and fond of on earth… and when they realize that although they can return, they seldom do.
They have an opportunity to chat or to comfort them - the people they know and love on earth. They soon begin to realize that they’re not acknowledged, they’re er, not welcomed and a’course that’s a great distress to people, I s’pose one of the greatest distress to people; that’s why they do have these reception stations… where there are very high souls in attendance who know how to deal with these... more difficult cases… and erm, in consequence, they’re soon ushered into the new way of thinking that for some people, it’s very difficult at first.
Why spiritual knowledge helps
That’s why if you have this knowledge… that it’s a tremendous help… so that you realize very quickly er, the whole situation... and you have the advantage that you can make contact. And those people near and dear to you, if they are sufficiently interested and invariably they are because through one’s knowledge of it oneself when on earth, one’s near ones are usually aware. You can usually get back with a communication, “I’m alright don’t worry about me and everything in the garden’s lovely” sort of thing. That cheers them up, cheers us up, and of course we settle down. Probably more quickly than the average person. I think the most difficult cases are these who have strong convictions, religious convictions... they find it much more difficult… sometimes they’re ‘quite problems’...
Children
Children are one of the greatest joys. I’ve seen so many children who live with their people over here. Of course, many of them – their parents are still on earth, but they’re taken in charge by people usually if possible related to them, like perhaps a grandmother and so on, but if there is no close tie or relationship, there are always souls here who’ll take charge. And we have schools for them, and then they learn all sorts of things... more important than they learned at school on earth. Here it’s a vastly different life altogether and yet one takes to it like a duck to water… at least I did… course some don’t… I s’pose at first, as I say, some find it very difficult.
Nationalities
Do you know that there are vast cities here... tremendous cities... and initially you do get communities of peoples who possibly because of nationality when on earth, and possibly because of their colour even, have this habit of clinging together, or being together. This is usually, of course, a temporary thing with most of them but… this is soon lost and there is no bad feeling or anything like that. You do get these groups who cling together and live as a community, who are possibly, when at least when on earth, were one nation, you know but er, they soon disappear. Oh, we have vast, vast cities and all manner of interest served, great halls of learning, and of music…
Materialism, filth and pollution are absent in the Spirit World
One can study any particular thing that appeals to one, err mostly of an artistic endeavour, because seems to me, I can realize that much more now, that art and the things of the mind and of the spirit are the things that are the most lasting, obviously. I mean, certain material abilities... have been very necessary and wonderful for the individual when on earth but here they’re not of much value. Those things are not necessary, they don’t exist. You see, this is a real world, but it’s not a material world. Therefore we don’t have the material aspects like you do on earth.
You don’t get vast factories, for instance. You don’t get railways and stations, and thank God, you don’t get all the noise, the filth and the dirt. Here it’s a world of absolute beauty, and there’s the joy of progress in everything, the feeling of elation that comes with the realization that all the time, you’re stepping forward. It’s so subtle, I suppose, that you’re not fully aware of it but there is this realization that nothing can ever be, well, too much of an effort. Everything will come gradually. There is progress of every sense, every kind, it’s a must. I mean, you can’t avoid it... it depends on you.
Always something news
You receive help and encouragement but it stills falls back on the individual and of course erm, there’s this realization that when it’s something which builds up, it is not something that just… you achieve something and that’s it. It’s the top and bottom of it. There always something new, something fresh, something more int’resting, some new experience, some new place to go to, some new people to visit, fresh arrivals coming who get over from the earth. People who we have known and loved, helping them to settle, getting them interested in all sorts of things over here, all things, err...
A real existence on a vibration far removed from earth
It’s very difficult… I realize of course now, more than I ever did… I don’t know what it is, to impart knowledge that is knowledge appertaining to this sort of life; life which is so far removed in some senses from earth and yet at the same time... it is vitally important that they realize what a reality of life it is… It’s not a wishy-washy affair over here. It’s not some sort of vague something. It’s a real, real existence, and we are in our own way as physical as you are. And yet it’s not a physical body as you have it. To all outward appearance it may look the same, but it isn’t, the construction is different. I mean we are living on a vibration that is so far removed from earth, and everything is rarefied in consequence and everything that we do has a meaning and purpose. At first, of course, one doesn’t really appreciate and one doesn’t really understand it, and no one can only understand and appreciate what would seem the purpose of so many things… I mean, when I look back on your side, I think, my God how did I ever get through it?
Your world to me, seems – well, it is as if there’s a dark, dreary foggy atmosphere. Of course the thought forces emanating from your world en masse are so terrible. There’s all this upset, hatred, bitterness and malice and goodness what else. And coupled with all the other issues and complications of life, it amazes me now looking back, of course, one doesn’t, course one doesn’t know any better when on earth. It seems almost such a remote thing, the old life… I wouldn’t want to come back to it.
George Woods: Could you tell us something...
George Olsen: (Interrupting) I don't know George, why you didn't come when you had the opportunity.
George Olsen: You were as near as coming over as... I don't know what, you know.
Betty Greene: He was, wasn't he Mr. Olsen.
George Olsen: What you wanted to hang on for, I'll never know.
George Woods: I've got more work to do here... Can you tell me about the colours? The colours on your side, what you see?
George Olsen: Colours? Huh! Colours - we've got every colour that you can imagine and millions more I should think. There's so many varieties of colour. Colour of course plays a very important part in our lives. But, you know, thought is a predominating factor. We can think and by our thoughts we can create. I don't want you to think that everything is just done by thought from the point of view that you just think of something and there it is. That does happen of course. But there are creative people. I mean people who create and design; design interiors of houses for those who come along who enjoy using their hands to construct.
Communicating through mediums
It's only for a fleeting second or two of Earth time that we can hold on to that thought sufficiently for it to be... picked up by a sensitive or a medium. But, you see, it is important, I think, to differentiate between clairvoyance - that is, what is received from a person, say, on Earth clairvoyantly from a person over here... and received and picked up by the medium on your side... In a sense, I think it's true to say that although we obviously do communicate... really, what you are receiving is a sort of mental clairvoyant picturization which is directed to Earth, to individuals, from the individuals on this side who are anxious to communicate.
Vocal and mental afterlife communication
This is a transmission of my thought via this artificial vocal voice box, call it what you will, which transmits it into sound. It is artificially created because after all, we can speak over here – we can communicate if we wish by the vocal effort. We learn very quickly that the best form of communication is a mental process... The more one sort of develops mentally and spiritually here, the more conscious and aware you become of other places, vistas and people. It’s just a matter of tapping the source and becoming, as it were, tuned into it. That seems to me the whole solution of everything.
There is nothing new... nothing that isn’t already there
In a sense, I think it is true to say that all the worlds are one - but the only thing that separates it all is the lack of experience, the lack of development within the individual. I think it depends and falls back on the person every time. Everything is there - same as, in a sense, it is in your world. Science discovers certain things over a period of time but it was always there, waiting to be discovered...
There's nothing new, in a sense. Everything that's going to happen has already happened and everything that one desires eventually comes into place, comes into being. It doesn't happen so much probably in your world but, my goodness me, it does here. It's all waiting. It's all there, ready. It's just a matter of tapping the source and becoming, as it were, tuned into it.
The fact is that everything is there. It's just that we ourselves are not yet ready to receive or we haven't developed or evolved sufficiently to make it possible to sort of become part of it or become conscious of it. But it's there. There's nothing that isn't already there - there's no doubt about that.
Betty Greene: Mr. Olsen, how do you spend your time now?
Mr Olsen: Oh my goodness me, time! You see that's a thing that doesn't exist for us. You see that's another thing that must become very puzzling to people. They say, 'Oh well, what do they do with their time?' Time, time, time! Well, we’re not conscious of time. Time does not mean anything to us. By coming back to you, we’re conscious of time to some extent. People say, ‘Oh well, I’m sure so-and-so will come and speak because it’s his birthday.’ Well, we couldn’t care less in a sense about birthdays. In fact we probably wouldn’t even remember it was our birthday if it were not for the fact that we pick up the idea or the thought from the consciousness of the individual near and dear to us on earth.
Conclusion of afterlife recording
Further Information
The Leslie Flint Trust website includes recordings with many historical figures including Arthur Conan Doyle, Mohandas Ghandi, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Rudolph Valentino, the Cook Sisters, Victoria and John Brown.
‘Leslie Flint became a famous British spirit medium, not because he stood on a platform and gave messages from the deceased, but because countless thousands of spirit communicators spoke for themselves at his séances.
The spirit voices were independent of Flint, he even spoke with them himself - and many of the voices were recorded.By the time Voices in the Dark was first published in 1971 Leslie Flint had been a medium for over 40 years - and he continued with his séances for a further 20 years.’
